She’d begun to wonder about similar things of late herself…and she simply didn’t know the answer. She knew that she loved her work and she loved her freedom. Then there were her books and the penchant for romance she’d developed. Was Michael right in his analysis? Was she in a kind of limbo, dangling between the woman she was at times and the woman she yearned to be at other times? Was there no happy compromise?

She anguished late and woke up early, determined to pore through the Sunday paper from the front page to the want ads. Yet her mind wandered to thoughts of Michael. He would have been here now…had he stayed. She might have cooked him breakfast—a real breakfast, fit for the man he was—and they might have shared the paper. Alone it seemed far less appealing.

Aimless steps took her out onto the balcony. The warm breeze ruffled the gauze of her robe as she stood at the railing, admiring the city before her. Where was he in all this? she asked herself. Was he spending the day alone too?

With a sigh of resignation, she settled onto the chaise. This was no day for the Sunday paper. What she wanted was Passion’s Challenge. Without a care for the why of it all, she reached for her book and opened to Chapter One. She was right back at the start.
